The Future of Work (and My Morning Coffee) Begins with Z

This morning, I found myself tucked at Zeb’s Coffeehouse in Eudora, KS — my favorite small-town spot where the coffee’s always good and conversations flow as easily as the creamer.

With my caramel frappe in hand, I cracked open “The Future Begins with Z: Nine Strategies to Lead Generation Z as They Disrupt the Workplace.” Pretty fitting, right? Reading about Gen Z while sitting in a place that starts with the same letter “Z”.

If you are not sure who falls in this category, Gen Z generally includes those born between 1997 and 2012 — the newest group of young adults and early career professionals who are reshaping how we all think about work, purpose, and connection.

This book was such a great reminder that every generation brings new “giftings” to the table. Gen Z offers:- Purpose with conviction — they want their work to matter.- Digital agility — tech and creativity come naturally.- Commitment to inclusion — belonging isn’t optional.- Authenticity — they seek real connection over perfection.

And yes, like all generations, they have their challenges as well. They crave feedback, value flexibility, and move faster than some of us might be ready for — but maybe that’s exactly what keeps the rest of us learning.

If you mentor, parent, teach, or work alongside Gen Z, this book will make you smile, think, and maybe even nod in recognition. They don’t need us to have every answer — just to listen, encourage, and believe in them.

The future isn’t somewhere ahead — it’s already here, sipping coffee and beginning with Z.
