The Most Underrated Trait in Leadership? Relentless Curiosity.

If you’re like me, you’ve learned that great leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it's about asking the right questions.

Earlier this year, I stepped off a plane in Kenya and was greeted by Cliff Muthoni. He helped with our luggage—not because it was his job, but because that’s who he is: a servant-hearted entrepreneur and part-time Director at A Bright Future for Kids – Kenya.

But what really caught my attention wasn’t his kindness—it was his curiosity.

Cliff didn’t ask surface-level questions. He leaned in. He asked:

“What do you think about…?”
“How do you approach…?”

His questions weren’t just for information—they were invitations to connect, to understand, to grow.

That’s what separates average leaders from transformative ones.
They aren’t satisfied with yesterday’s knowledge. They keep digging. They stay curious. They ask better questions.

Cliff reminded me:
Curiosity isn’t a phase—it’s a leadership muscle. And it doesn’t weaken with age or experience. It gets sharper, if we let it.

So here’s my “Cliff” challenge to you today:

  • What conversation are you overdue to lean into with curiosity?

  • Where are you assuming… when you could be asking?

  • What’s one question that could unlock something new in your team, your business—or yourself?

Let’s stop chasing certainty and start leading with curiosity.
