What Our Kenyan Driver Taught Me About Leadership and Having Someone’s Back

It’s easy to spot Jack Otieno in a crowd.

He’s about 6'5" and built like an NBA all-star. But it’s not just his size that made an impression — it was his presence.

While in Kenya in early June, Jack was our driver. But looking back… he was so much more.

A trained chef, he helped feed over 200 people at one of the graduations for A Bright Future for Kids.

He played bodyguard in sketchy areas of town.

And at Nairobi National Park, when we found ourselves surrounded by a rowdy gang of baboons, Jack stood between us and them and said confidently:

“As long as you’re with me, they won’t mess with you.”

That line has stuck with me.

It wasn’t cocky — it was protective.

Not a boast — but a promise.

And it reminded me of what great service is supposed to feel like.

At Fulling Management & Accounting, one of our core values is: “Represent the Client.”

That means making sure our clients know we’ve got their back - even when business gets a bit challenging.

Jack gave us guidance, confidence, and peace of mind on that trip.

And honestly? One day I want to be as strong (and as cool) as Jack.

Because anyone who can scare off baboons, successfully drive the streets of Nairobi, and feed 200 people… deserves superhero status in my book.
