Goats, God, and a Flat Tire
What Does a Sunday morning in Kenya Look Like?
Let me paint you a picture — and no, this isn’t fiction. This was one of our Sunday's in early June.
We were gently (and by gently, I mean with urgency) awakened by our host knocking on the door: “You’ve got 10 minutes to pack up. Let’s go.”
Adventure button = pressed.
A brisk morning walk took us through a stunning, landscaped path... straight to our host’s pet crocodiles. Yes. Crocodiles. Before breakfast. That’ll wake you up faster than coffee.
Bellies full and shoes dusty, we made an unplanned construction stop to build a new goat pen. Why? Because goats need a home.
Next stop: inspiration. We visited a single mom running a successful working farm — a vision of what’s possible for the model A Bright Future for Kids is scaling. Her goats were thriving, and so was she.
Then came church… fashionably late.
No one seemed to mind. Especially since we had with us, the Bishop and two pastors form Kansas who would all be speaking that day.
With more enthusiasm than I’ve seen at an NFL game, the worship team kicked off our time together, followed by two vision casting sermons from Pastor Dan Jacobsen and Pastor Benjamin White, singing from the kids, announcements, more singing, and of course — a goat milk meeting right after service. (You read that right. Cheese, creams, production tips, and everything in between. Thanks Michelle Julian for sharing your expertise in this area).
After a several goodbyes and a few photos, when we thought we were ready to head out, we discovered… a flat tire. And a spare tire that was more decorative than functional.
Off-road we went, piling the crew into one van and bouncing our way to the nearest village auto shop.
Closed.
Because… Sunday.
But God provides: the owner lived above the shop and came down to help us patch things up.
Lunch at 4:30pm.
Followed by a 2.5-hour drive back to Nairobi — dusty, joyful, full of goat knowledge, and hearts completely full.
Nothing went according to plan.
But maybe… everything went according to plan.
