Leadership Looks Like Penina: A Story of Grit, Grace, and Generational Impact

What does leadership look like?
It looks a lot like my new friend Penina in Kenya.

Doing her best to raise 4 young kids of her own, she now is also raising her little 7-year granddaughter.

As the tears flowed, she shared some of her heartbreaking story. Like so many women in her community, she had been abandoned and marginalized. When others would have given up, she kept going.

With grit and a never give up attitude, she is a leader worth following.
Penina is part of the A Bright Future for Kids program that helps equip and empower single moms to become entrepreneurs and self-sufficient.    The 3-year program provides a small financial stipend for the family needs, along with a small amount for her new business and savings.

Our team from the U.S. was able to do a “groundbreaking” by adding a few planks to her new goat pen. Along with her cow and rabbits, her newest venture will be raising goats for milk, cheese, etc.

As a kind gesture, she invited us into her small 10x10 home. Tradition says by doing so, it blesses both the home and the guests. I know the latter was true for me and our team.

Leadership doesn’t always occur around boardrooms and Zoom meetings. Sometimes it looks like modeling hard work for our kids and grandkids. Through her day-to-day leadership, Penina is making a generational impact.
